“The person attempts to breathe, but can't. The patient often wakes up choking or gasping, but they may also snore or there may be breathing pauses before the oxygen level drops and the brain kicks in.” - Nancy Keiluhn

There are many different reasons why you may snore, and if you want to stop your snoring then understanding the causes of snoring is probably the single most important step towards actually doing something about it. If you don't understand the Causes of snoring it's pretty much impossible to find the best solution or remedy for you. What works for one person to stop snoring won't necessarily work for someone else.

What are the causes of snoring sounds?

Causes of Snoring The sound of snoring is what makes it annoying, but where does this sound come from? In short snoring is caused by the tissues in your throat, particularly the soft palate, vibrating as you breathe. Every time you breathe in and out the vibrations are caused and you get the horrible, irritating noise we know as snorring. There are also different types of snorers. For example, some people breathe through their nose and some people snore through their mouth. Whether you're a nose breather or a mouth breather affects what stop snoring solution will work for you.

What are the causes of your snoring?

There can be many underlying reasons why you snore. One of the most common Causes of snoring is being obese or overweight. This can cause excess body fat in your throat area, which narrows your airways and causes you to breathe more heavily when you sleep. As the air forces it's way through a narrower passage and at a greater ferocity it causes more vibrations in the tissues. Losing some weight and taking some exercise can greatly help you to stop snoring.

Another of the most common causes of snoring is smoking. Being a smoker again puts pressure on your airways. You'll find that many smokers are also snorers, and giving up the habit can have a positive impact on your efforts. Similarly, drinking alcohol can cause snoring as it acts as a relaxant in your tongue and throat tissues.

Your sleeping position is another one of the causes of snooring. If you lay on your back your tongue will often curl back as you sleep, reducing the space for the air you breathe through your mouth. Simple lying on your side can stop the snoring because it makes your tongue move to the side rather than the back of your mouth. Sleeping position is not always about your sleeping orientation either. Ensuring your mouth is lined up with your spine by increasing the number of pillows you sleep on can also help to solve another one of the causes of snoring.

Snoring can also be caused by factors such as air pollution or allergies. Some people find that sleeping with an air purifier is enough to stop them snoring, whilst breathing in herbal oils can help too. Remember that not everyone is a regular snorer either. Some people only snore for example if they've drunk too much alcohol in the evening. Another of the most common Causes of snoring is also cold and flu viruses. Many adults and children alike snore when they have a cold which causes a blocked nose, but it goes away as soon as it has cleared.
